HANG GLIDING REQUIRES PROPER TRAINING.  USE A USHGA CERTIFIED INSTRUCTOR!!

Have you ever dreamed that you were flying?  Well, think about how it would be to run off a hill and then all of a sudden you began flying through the air.  That is what it is like to hang glide.  In Amarillo, we don't have very many hills, so another method that we use to hang glide is to tow the person and their hang glider up into the air.  To accomplish this, we use a specially designed vehicle to tow the hang glider up as high as 2400 feet into the air.  Once the rope is released from the hang glider, the pilot can then "catch" a thermal (an air mass that is going upward into the sky) and continue to climb up higher into the sky.

After the pilot decides he wants to come back down, he simply picks a clear area to land his hang glider.  A typical hang glider is about 35 feet wide and about 10 feet deep.  A hang glider can land in a very small area, but with all of the wide open spaces around Amarillo, the pilot has plenty of places from which to choose.

We are always looking for people who want to watch hang gliding or even help us tow up the hang gliders.  Where else can you have so much fun for free?  If you know of a place where we can fly, like a nice hill for practicing or somewhere really high, PLEASE send us an email.  We also are looking for people who want to learn to hang glide as well.  We can show you a lot about hang gliding right here in Amarillo and also let you try handling a hang glider while standing on the ground.  Maybe you'd like to try running with a hang glider...

If you want to go up in a hang glider with a trained pilot/instructor, contact Steve Burns at (979) 279-9382 (Business)or (979) 229-2699 (Cell).  He can give you a tandem (you and him together in the hang glider) ride down in Hearne, TX.  Many of the world long distance hang gliding records start from Steve's location.  By the way, these world records are from 265 miles to 350 miles in one flight.

By the way, yes hang gliding is always done wearing a parachute.  Safety is number one when hang gliding.  Never give up any of your safety factors!  The hang gliding equipment has advanced in the past 30 years to the point that they are very safe and a lot of fun to fly.  I wouldn't recommend anyone take up hang gliding if they are not willing to keep safety first, because after all, you are going to be several thousand feet above the ground.

With all this said, hang gliding is a great sport and fun as a pilot, spectator or even as a tow car driver.  If you'd like to see some hang gliding, or help us out so we can tow up here in Amarillo or if you want to find out more about learning to hang glide send us an email. You can contact us by clicking the email link at the bottom of the page.  Hope to hear from you and remember, no questions are dumb questions.
